Free citation checker that verifies APA, MLA, and other references against real academic databases and flags fake or AI-generated sources.
CiteTrue Citation Checker is a free web tool that verifies academic references against authoritative scholarly databases before a paper is submitted, reviewed, or published. It is built for undergraduate and graduate students, PhD candidates, journal reviewers and editors, academic advisors, and independent researchers who need to be certain that every entry in a reference list points to work that actually exists. The problem it solves is specific: citations drafted or edited with large language models are often fabricated or quietly altered, and those errors survive into submission unless someone checks each entry by hand. CiteTrue automates that process by combining retrieval algorithms with AI language models, querying academic databases, and returning a per-reference report with a confidence score for each citation. The tool is free to use, supports APA, MLA, and other common styles, and is available in eleven interface languages.
CiteTrue Citation Checker is a free citation verification tool that compares the references in a document against authoritative academic databases and reports which ones are accurate, which contain errors, and which cannot be found at all. It accepts a pasted reference list in APA, MLA, and other formats and returns a verification report with a confidence score for each entry.
The checker splits a reference list into individual citations, breaks each citation into fields such as title, authors, year, and DOI, and queries academic databases to find a matching record. The matched record is then compared field by field, and the results are aggregated into a confidence score and a summary report. If the first pass is inconclusive, the system can query additional databases before finalizing the result.
The tool verifies that a reference points to a real, correctly described publication. It cannot judge whether the cited work is relevant to the claim it supports, and it cannot evaluate the overall quality of an argument or methodology. Coverage also depends on what each external database indexes, so a valid citation in a poorly indexed venue may occasionally require a manual check.
